The first Jamnesty event at Brudenell Social Club put the fun in fundraising

On 28th November 2018, we hosted our first ever Jamnesty at the Brudenell Social Club. Following on from the ‘I WELCOME’ campaign of 2017, we decided to collaborate with the Leeds Asylum Seekers Support Network (LASSN) - a local Leeds-based organisation that helps to improve the lives of refugees and asylum seekers in the city. We were honoured to have a member of LASSN join us on the night to tell us about their fantastic work.
First to perform were So To Speak, a brass band who put their twist on modern tunes, from Shakira to Beyoncé. They got everybody moving with their upbeat classics - it’s true that hips don’t lie.
They were followed by Arnold Ziff, an indie rock band whose unique sounds got everyone into the party spirit. They are due to return to the Brudenell Social Club on Tuesday 11th February for Transmission, an event run by fellow University of Leeds society, Leeds Student Radio.
Next up, Mondo Bizarre made their debut performance and soon became a crowd favourite as their jazz and blues sounds rocked the Brudenell stage. We loved them so much, they went on to headline our second Jamnesty just four months later. Recently they celebrated the launch of their first single, ‘Wondering How’, now available to stream on Spotify.
Our headliners were Shaku, an established jazz fusion funk band whose talent blew us all away. They too will be returning to the Brudenell Social Club on Saturday 15th February as part of their own headline UK tour, Shaku “Maku”.
On the night, we raised a phenomenal £1,155 for Amnesty International and the Leeds Asylum Seekers Support Network - more money than we had ever raised before. It was the event that launched Jamnesty as our society’s flagship biannual fundraiser and is only becoming bigger and better every year.
